What do these three things have in common?

Hello again gentle readers! Yes, I called you gentle readers. I am one episode away from finishing season 3 of Bridgerton. Writing for a blog and sending it out into the world has me feeling a bit like a modern Lady Whistledown.

What do a 2500-year-old Greek tragedy, dining facilities, and college professors have in common? It’s probably not the answer you think. We aren’t talking about literature professors having lunch on campus (even if that would be an interesting discussion). Any other guesses???

Still thinking? Okay, I’ll give you a moment before I tell you the answer.

These three items are all subjects of qualitative research articles! This may not seem that exciting but after dealing with quantitative data last week, qualitative research articles were a day at the park.

Once again, I will be reviewing three articles and providing a quick analysis of each. For a slightly more in-depth analysis, you can watch the video located at the bottom of this post.

The Articles

Antigone: On Phronesis and How to Make Good and Timely Leadership Decisions by Contu (2023)

Leveraging A Lenient Category in Practicing Responsible Leadership: A Case Study by Jiang et al. (2022)

Reimagining Leadership Through the Everyday Resistance of Faculty of Color by Quinteros and Covarrubias (2023).

A Greek Tragedy

In the presentation video, I go through a compare and contrast of the methods, data, and data analysis. Here, I will give a quick overview of the articles and then direct you to watch the video to find out more. In the Contu (2023) article, the researcher conducts an analysis on the Greek tragedy, Antigone, to identify leadership skills and behaviors which are still relevant in the 21st century. The researcher then applies the leadership skills, behaviors, and lessons presented in Antigone to a modern-day example.

Dining Facilities

In Leveraging Lenient Categories, the researchers examine the benefits of loose categories for leaders through an extended case study supported by ethnographic field work and interviews. Some of the benefits include:

College Professors

In Reimagining Leadership, the researchers interview 16 faculty of color at institutions of higher education to discover how they resist oppression.

Thematic Analysis

While all three of these articles utilize different data collection methods, the data analysis of each article has a similarity. All three articles use some form of thematic analysis. The Contu and Jiang et al. articles use more of an inductive thematic analysis while the Quinteras and Covarrubias article uses a latent thematic analysis.

The process of thematic analysis

What Does This All Mean For Future Kate?

These qualitative research articles illustrate some of the different qualitative methods and data analysis which can be used in conducting research. As I move forward with the process of conducting my own research and data analysis for my dissertation, these articles can serve as examples of the different thematic analysis.

The articles for this week were much easier for me to read and understand than the quantitative research articles. But as I think about the two types of research articles, I can see how quantitative and qualitative data can work together to present a clearer picture of the research.
